NFL Draft analyst suggests Steelers should take a big swing opposed to playing it safe
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Every NFL team sets out this time of year with the goal of winning a Super Bowl.

But in reality, few teams have the appropriate roster, much less the culture and infrastructure required to be a champion.

And while Pittsburgh's NFL record of six Lombardi's proves the latter, they lack the former, with NFL Media's Daniel Jeremiah suggesting a potential fix:

Steelers Need to be in Win-Now Mode

"They [Steelers] have a couple different areas they need to address and they can  kind of be flexible based off who’s there in what order they go in addressing the positions," Jeremiah said on his pre-draft conference call. "They’re ready to win right now. I think they’ve kind of tried to form their identity, get back to who they are. They want to run the football. They want to be better up front. I thought the offensive line took some steps forward with the additions they had last year. I think they continue to add to it this year. And then they’ve just got to get some production out of the quarterback position, whether that’s Russell or whether that’s Fields, that’s going to determine their success. But I agree with you from the standpoint of they don’t need to pick somebody for three years from now. They’re ready to go right now. They need to plug some of those spots.”

Here's the truth, not only is Jeremiah right in the description of the Steelers process, but the organization itself has proven this offseason that they are in win-now mode.

Whether the roster is in such a mode is up for debate, but you don't trade for Russell Wilson and sign Patrick Qeen to the biggest deal in free-agent franchise history if you're on a three-year plan.

If that was the case you stick with Kenny Pickett, who was going into...

Oh yeah, year three.

Instead, Pittsburgh realizes that the primes of T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Alex Highsmith, and Minkah Fitzpatrick are happening right now, with Heyward closer to the end than the beginning.

But even if the offseason moves didn't clue you in on the organization's mindset, then recent rumors about the team as a trade candidate for star WR Brandon Aiyuk should.

So picking a tackle that needs development or a WR that is a solid third option shouldn't and probably won't be on the table. For the first time in over 20 years, trading down in round one could be a real option for Pittsburgh, allowing them to accumulate draft capital that produces multiple second round picks to go along with a first and two three's, all of which can be used to find starters.

That's risky and is certainly out of Pittsburgh's usual comfort zone, as they are more likely to trade up as opposed to back, when analyzed historically.

But if GM Omar Khan has shown anything in his short tenure, it's that he's not opposed to risk, change or doing what's best in the immediate future, something that Jeremiah and others think could be.a real possibility over draft weekend.
