Brewers place SP Eric Lauer on IL

The Milwaukee Brewers 2022 season continues to be one of bad news. After placing starter Freddy Peralta on the 10-day IL with shoulder fatigue, the Brewers placed another member of their rotation on IL Saturday. Eric Lauer has been placed on the 15-day IL retroactive to September 8. The team recalled Trevor Kelley from Nashville to take his place on the major league roster.

Lauer is 10-7 with a 3.91 ERA for the Brewers this season. He last pitched on September 7 in a loss to the Colorado Rockies. Lauer gave up seven runs on six hits in 2.2 innings pitched.

Kelley returns for what will likely be a prominent bullpen role. In 16 games with the Brewers this season, he is 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 21.0 innings. Kelley has given up seven home runs during that time. He has been much better down in Nashville, where he is 2-3 with a 1.78 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 30.1 innings.

It's fair to question the decision to give Kelley the roster spot.

With the team short on starting pitching, why not give Josh Lindblom a second chance? This year, Lindblom is 7-7 with a 4.41 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 120.1 innings. Sure, the numbers are not great and he struggled last season, but what do the Brewers have to lose at this point?

Another interesting option would have been Zack Brown. The right-handed hurler is a relief pitcher who is 1-0 with a 3.40 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 45 innings this season.
